The second looks at how we are constituted as speaking subjects by historical/political discourses, drawing on poststructuralism. The first is concerned with how we interact linguistically and socially, drawing on interactional and anthropological approaches. It discusses three perspectives on repertoire. This paper foregrounds the concept of Spracherleben, the lived experience of language, in a contribution to ongoing debate about the conceptualization of linguistic repertoire in the context of mobility and migration. The notion of linguistic repertoire in interactional sociolinguistics In view of the current debate on linguistic diversity, it is useful to go back to the origin of the notion of a linguistic repertoire. The third part discusses how a poststructuralist approach can contribute to expanding the notion of 'repertoire'. The second part presents empirical material on linguistic repertoires using a multimodal, biographical approach, and involves a close reading of a language portrait, a visual and verbal representation of linguistic experience, and linguistic resources. In the first part of the article, I discuss how the notion of a linguistic repertoire was developed by John Gumperz from an interactional perspective, how the concept is challenged by the conditions of super-diversity, and how poststructur-alist approaches, especially those of Jacques Derrida and Judith Butler, can contribute to exploring undervalued factors such as the power of categories or the significance of desire in language. REVISITING THE LINGUISTIC REPERTOIRE This article argues for the relevance of poststructuralist approaches to the notion of a linguistic repertoire and draws on empirical data to show how speakers conceive and represent their heteroglossic repertoires. The final part of the article discusses how a poststructuralist approach can contribute to expanding the notion of 'repertoire'. In the second part, this article considers a novel methodological approach to studying linguistic repertoires: a multimodal, biographical approach using a language portrait, which involves a close reading of the visual and verbal representation of linguistic experience and linguistic resources. It then argues that poststructuralist approaches, exemplified in the work of Jacques Derrida and Judith Butler, add an exploration of previously neglected factors such as the power of categories or the significance of desire in language. The first part of the article revisits Gumperz's notion of a linguistic repertoire, and then considers the challenge to the concept represented by the conditions of super-diversity. This article argues for the relevance of poststructuralist approaches to the notion of a linguistic repertoire and introduces the notion of language portraits as a basis for empirical study of the way in which speakers conceive and represent their heteroglossic repertoires. Referring to examples from my own research I will argue that such approaches can be particularly productive in addressing topics such as language and emotion, language and subject positions or identity constructions, or language attitudes linked to language ideologies and discourses on language and language use. The paper also discusses aspects of data collection and interpretation as well as ethical implications. Schematically I shall contrast three theoretical positions within the interpretative paradigm: approaches based on interactionist, on phenomenological and on poststructuralist thinking. It then situates biographical research within the interpretative paradigm in social and cultural studies. The paper gives a brief overview of studies in multilingualism that employ a biographical approach, drawing on different kinds of data such as diaries, autobiographical texts, language memoirs, biographical interviews, and multimodal representations. Benefiting from a strong tradition in phenomenological thought, biographical methods have developed particularly in the German speaking scientific space over the last decades. They can contribute to an understanding of the linguistic repertoire as reflecting individual life trajectories, heterogeneous life worlds and discourses about language and language use referring to specific time-spaces. For the repertoire approach, biographical methods can be particularly interesting as they emphasize the perspective of the experiencing and speaking subject. In multilingualism research a shift of paradigm can be observed: the idea of languages as distinct categories is being abandoned in favour of the notion of linguistic repertoire, which seems more apt to grasp the complexity of heteroglossic practices.

Minimalism is about not thinking about things. This kind of thing is frustrating to me because stop worrying about what to label you lifestyle and just live it how you think is right. Simple living is about just enjoying your home and family and not needing all this “worldly’ bull to keep you entertained and I know a lot of minimalist that still (pre-covid) bar hop and go to movies on the regular, definitely not simple or frugal. I feel like homesteading is more about simple living (again not really minimalism but most likely coincide) and/or someone who is trying to be more off-grid. Also, homesteading might seem minimal, but do you know how much crap you need to plant/can/jar. Being frugal is taking home a handful of screws off a packaging crate because “what? these are brand new and I’ll need them eventually” (actual quote from me), which a don’t know a single minimalist that has a screw collection just in case. Being frugal would make you absolutely cringe on spending $100 on some leggings, and although you would know it’s worth it in the long run, you will spend a month looking for coupons and sales to get those leggings for $75 and free shipping or used for 12 bucks. You might practice forms of minimalism because you are frugal, green, simple living, homesteading, etc, or you might be a minimalist AND one of those things. Being minimal tends to make a person spend a lot of of money on 1 quality thing so they don’t have to bother replacing often. Minimalism isn’t anti-consumerism or “being green”. What is the Difference Between Minimalist Living and Frugal Living Simple Tips for Minimalist Home Decorating How to Simplify Your Life with a Minimalist Wardrobe How to Ease Your Family into Minimalist Living Either are really great lifestyles because they allow a person to decide how far they wish to go with each one.ĭo you live a minimalist lifestyle or a frugal one? Does either lifestyle appeal to you? More Articles on Minimalist Living I want to stress that there is no wrong way to be frugal or minimalist. A minimalist would likely just alter the clothing they already own and learn skills like sewing or mending to make their clothing last the longest.Īs you can see, neither way is necessarily “better” than the other, but rather the difference lies in buying more vs “making do” with what you have. A minimalist would likely just work with what they have on hand or what they can easily obtain for a low price, possibly homesteading to grow their own food.Ī frugal living individual would seek out the most cost effective way to buy new clothing for their wardrobe in the changing of seasons. A minimalist would probably get rid of TV all together and instead opt for a creative low cost hobby to fill in down time.Ī frugal living individual would try to make meals with low cost ingredients and would search out the way to get the ingredients they desire the cheapest. Here are some examples of what a frugal living person would likely do verses a minimalist for a greater understanding of the difference in the two.Ī frugal living individual might cancel cable and instead go with a streaming service. Minimalism is also like living frugally because it is living a life that is low in debt as well as low in financial obligations. Minimalism requires that you live with only the things you absolutely need in order to avoid feeling like you need to take on too many possessions, promises of time and even food. It can be very freeing to get rid of things you do not absolutely need or use. Just as living with less is common in frugal living lifestyles, it is vital to a minimalism lifestyle. For instance, instead of buying more storage containers, using ones from food you already bought is one way to combine frugality with minimalism. In order to get away from a feeling that you need to have the next big thing that is available for purchase, it is important that you find ways to get around that mindset and living frugally is one of those ways. Now, frugality is definitely a part of minimalism. It is living in such a way that you stay away from the constant need to “keep up with the Joneses”. Minimalism is basically just escaping consumerism. It is doing things in a way that means you can afford it or in a way that makes it easier to afford other things you want, desire or need. What is the Difference Between Minimalist Living and Frugal Living?įrugal living is simply the art of finding a cheaper way to do things. Let’s explore the difference between the two so you can decide if minimalist living is right for you. The two are very easily connected as living frugally often means living simply and minimalism often means doing things in a less expensive way. This may be a strange question to pose, but, what is the difference between minimalist living and just “plain old Frugal living”? The OED says it's a British colloquial phrase meaning: It appears to have naval origins, but the evidence is still only 20th century (1948) and there's no suggestion of it originating from dipping a special boot/cup into rum in Nelson's time, but rather being able to eat so much until your boots are also full. I can't think of anything more exemplary of gusto than a sailor getting blind stinking drunk out of his shoe. The previous debauch in connexion with the new, soon tumbled him on the ground and he lay there gradually sinking into stupidity but, as he took his leave of consciousness, he admonished the others to take care of themselves to take as much as they could rightly carry but not to get drunk, saying, as he sunk lower and lower himself, "Fill your boots, boys-fill your boots! Give me one small drop in a shoe to make me well again, for I'm- I'm-."Īlas, poor humanity! There lay in the deepest degradation, as good a fighting soldier, and, when he could not get drink, as cleanly and active a fellow as ever the English army possessed. "Drink, you devils, drink!" he said "its all one how much you drink, only don't get drunk!" And again he filled his shoe, and again he drank. In quick time they were at the wine-pipe for a moment the new hands seemed at a loss for the means of getting the wine to their mouths but the "wide-a-awake" boy sliped (sic) off one of his shoes in a twinkling, dipped it into the cask and drank. The following is an excerpt from Memoirs of Serjeant Paul Swanston: being a narrative of a soldier's life, in barracks, ships, camps, battles, and captivity on sea and land with notices of the most adventurous of his comrades. As all good sayings do, it comes from a sailor. It started about two years ago when Dwyer, a local artist, and a friend, Chris Powell, put together Philadelphia’s first “Pizzacentric” art show, which included different types of art created by around 30 local artists, all dedicated to pizza. “I’m almost obsessed with pizza, but I think these guys are way more obsessed with pizza.”Īnd with Kay’s first order, the register rang and a dream two years in the making was fulfilled. “I knew it was going to be crazy over here,” Matthew Kay, who purchased the first slice in Pizza Brain history, said. Soup and bread lines fed the hungriest Americans of the Great Depression. You can’t talk about the Great Depression and not mention soup. The recipe I’m sharing today is based on a potato soup my great grandma Agnes used to make. Many families picked wild dandelions and served it as a salad. My great grandfather Eugene raised rabbits to eat. If you were lucky enough to live in a rural area, you could grow your own produce, forage for wild berries, fish or hunt. Imagine being poor, depressed AND sober? God Bless FDR. His policies fed millions and ended Prohibition. However bad the food, his New Deal led to a chicken in every pot and a beer in every glass. Perhaps due to the fact that they hired an unskilled housekeeper as their White House Chef. President FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt joined the cause and ate modestly in solidarity, although out of all our presidents, they had the most notoriously bad food. There was even a radio cooking show produced by the USDA which featured Uncle Sam’s Wife….Aunt Sammy ( now that’s some creative naming). Home Economics was a growing field, where experts could share their knowledge of nutrition and savings. Here, eager mothers learned how to make jams, preserve food, raise chickens, how to gather seeds and grow their own food. In times of need, people came together to share meals at church potlucks, bartered with neighbors, and made friends at home extension classes where recipes and skills were shared. Kraft Mac & Cheese was invented in this time and fed a family of 4 for just 19 cents. Honestly, it was surprisingly tasty! Hey, it wasn’t all bad. I once made my 8th grade students bake an authentic Great Depression Era cake that called for Campbell’s tomato soup in place of oil. Other delicious morsels include: Vinegar Cobbler,Liver Loaf, Mock Apple Pie made with Ritz crackers, Peanut Butter Stuffed Onions, Hot Water Pie, Gelatin Luncheon Salad, and my personal favorite, S.O.S (or Shit on a Shingle, a military staple of canned corned beef in a gloopy, mystery sauce served on toast). The most bleak recipe I could find was “Hobo Stew” which called for a pinch of tobacco and LINT. Families had to get creative to fill their bellies. Imagining any time in history, my mind instantly jumps to… BUT WHAT WERE THEY EATING?! Or in this case, not eating. October 24th, 1929, now known as Black Thursday, led to several more stock market slumps and ultimately, the Great Depression. 93 years ago today, the stock market crashed. There was a Talking Heads song in the mid-80's called "Road to Nowhere." If you like that song here's your opportunity to listen to it as you take a ride on a REAL Road to Nowhere. I don't really know how long you'd have to hike to get to the cars on the trail. Google Fontana Dam underwater ghost town, and Judson Ghost Town. I saw pictures of the old cars from back when they made the dam. So maybe next summer we will swing by it and walk through. LOL Now reading more about it, I think it was a horse. No one else was there so we chickened out. We saw a huge mound of poop and just figured it was a bear. There was a bear alert in every park we went to because it is June and July. I could already see the F bombs on the walls. We decided not to walk through it being we had kids. The tunnel is neat but too bad they can't up keep it more. After approaching the tunnel, there is a parking lot. I know it had to be done but it is just creepy, sad and so intriguing. The towns that were flooded over to build the dam. Just think of all the history underneath that water. The boat takes them to the old cemetery sites only once a year. Most of the people that were promised the road are no longer living. Scenic and worth taking the extra hour to do.Īfter taking the trip to the Fontana Dam. I feel like just about anyone that can walk a couple of miles can do it. Take the time to do the trail coming out of the tunnel (tunnel bypass trail) it brings you back to the parking lot. We had to park along the side of the road as there is very few parking spots and it has a lot of visitors. Some people are driving really fast and come in hot at the end of the road which seems a little dangerous. I was nervous a little as my husband was the driver and it I did not want him to take his eyes off the road as they twist and turn around the mountain. There are a few scenic pull over stops that are breathtaking. We pulled over along the way about 7-8 miles on way to the tunnel. The road was very well maintained and the scenery was unbelievable. The road to Nowhere takes you to the tunnel to nowhere which takes you to a very nice hiking trail. Did this one afternoon and I am so glad we did.
